Dance Class Descriptions

Acro:

This class incorporates dance, tumbling, and partner skills. Students will get to practice safely on mats while gaining strength and consistency. This class helps dancers learn tricks that are a great way to add that extra “wow” factor to all styles of dance. This is a great class for anyone taking Poms, Jazz or Hip Hop. Great additions to this class are Strength & Flexibility, Conditioning and Turns & Progressions.

Class Attire: Form fitting shorts or pants, leotard or tight top. Hair pulled back, secured away from face. No Shoes Required.

Adult Dance:

Have prior dance training? Or maybe you want to be able to follow along with what your kids are doing at home. This class will offer a warm-up and stretch, a variety of dance style techniques from week to week and a cool-down. Also check out our adult fitness options.

Class Attire: Comfortable, movable clothing. Hair secured away from face. Jazz shoes, gym shoes, bare feet or socks.

Ballet:

The foundation of dance. This classical style teaches you poise and body alignment that applies to all styles of dance. We meld discipline, hard work and good class etiquette into rewording fun! This class is required in order to take any lyrical or jazz classes. This is a great addition to any and all styles of dance.

Class Attire: Black Leotard, Pink Ballet Tights. Hair in a clean, tight bun. Pink Ballet Shoes

Ballet/Tap Combo:

Perfect for our younger dancers as a way to be introduced to the basics of each style. Each portion of class focuses on the fundamental terminology, placement and technique. Two mini classes in one makes this the perfect blend of movement and discipline!

Class Attire: Black Leotard (with or without skirt), Pink Ballet Tights. Hair in a bun (if hair is too short- a clean pony tail or braids). Pink Ballet Shoes and Tap Shoes (Mary Jane or Laced Styles).

Boys Dance Too:

Perfect for our male dancers who are wanting to move, work on agility, coordination and ultimately have fun with music oriented activities! Dance is a great supplement for sports training, actors and young kids who are looking for a creative outlet!

Class Attire: Loose clothing that they can move in- no jeans! Clean Gym Shoes.

Conditioning:

30-minutes focused on strengthening the body. Geared towards those working on acro elements, to help improve consistency, stamina and strength. A great addition for anyone taking Acro, Poms or Hip Hop.

Contemporary:

A mix and melding of multiple dance styles. Focusing on spacial and body awareness, the use of body weight, floor work, jumps, turns, efficiency of muscle usage, and safe body alignment. Based on the foundation of ballet, this class requires 1 ballet class a week in order to add this style to your schedule. This style can have you expressing yourself through spoken word all the way to jammin’ out to Beyonce! A great addition to this class is Strength & Flexibility.

Dance for Theatre:

Have a singer or actor in the house who loves to perform? This class is perfect for the musical theatre participant who wants to work on their dance pick-up skills, technique and transitions and learn a few valuable tricks along the way to help stand out at their next audition and earn themselves a “featured” dance roll. Great additions to this class are Turns & Progressions, Jazz and Acro.

Funkytots:

Another class meant for young dancers. A mix of dance, movement and sensory games. Before you know it, your little one will be giving you lots of great music to turn on in the car and even more moves to steal for yourself.

Class Attire: Comfortable, movable clothing. Hair secured back, away from face. Clean gym or street shoes (for inside use only) or Jazz shoes.

Hip Hop:

Come learn the most popular and newest dance trends! This class is a fun way to move and groove. Students are introduced to rhythm, musicality and performance. To help improve your strength and tricks, we recommend adding Conditioning, Strength & Flexibility and Acro.

Class Attire: Baggy/Movable Clothing. Hair secured away from face. Clean gym or street shoes(for inside use only).

Hip Hop Tricks:

Working on elements in your classes that you need extra practice with? This is a great class to work on your “show-stopping” elements! Practice under the guidance of a trained teacher to insure safety and maximum execution. To help improve your strength and tricks, we recommend adding Conditioning, Strength & Flexibility and Acro.

Class Attire: Baggy/Movable Clothing. Hair secured away from face. Clean gym or street shoes(for inside use only).

Jazz:

Energetic and upbeat! We build a foundation of proper technique then mix it with endurance and strength. After securing the fundamentals, we build in elements of turns, jumps, kicks and more. This style can range from smooth and stylized to quick and sassy. To help explore all styles of movement, we recommend adding a ballet class, or to help with technical elements, Turns & Progressions.

Class Attire: Form fitting shorts or pants, leotard or tight top, hair pulled back secured away from face, jazz shoes.

Lyrical:

Built off of a ballet technique foundation, we then layer with expressive and interpretive movement that fit and express the lyrics of the music. Letting the song lyrics be the guide for the dancer often allows us to improve on our improvisational skills and individual development. Due to it’s foundation of ballet, this class requires 1 ballet class a week in order to add this style to your schedule. We also recommend adding Turns & Progressions or Strength & Flexibility to take your training to the next level.

Class Attire: Form fitting shorts, pants or leggings, leotard or tight top. Hair pulled back, secured away from face, preferably in a bun. Jazz shoes or Turners, No Socks.

Mini Movers:

Making movement and dance fun by sparking their brains with exciting music to help build motor skills, coordination, balance, structure, memorization and confidence. This class is geared towards kids who love to move, but might not yet be interested in dance technique.

Class Attire: Comfortable, movable clothing. Clean gym or street shoes (for inside use only). When using mats: socks or bare feet required.

Modern:

A fluid language of movement, unique unto itself. A foundation of movement that has led to the creation of jazz, lyrical and the ever popular contemporary dance. Come learn the unique vocabulary that will leave you feeling grounded and connected to your body and movement. Due to it’s foundation of ballet, this class requires 1 ballet class a week in order to add this style to your schedule. We also recommend adding Turns & Progressions or Strength & Flexibility to take your training to the next level.

Class Attire: Form fitting shorts, pants or leggings, leotard or tight top. Hair pulled back, secured away from face, preferably in a bun. Bare feet, No Socks.

Movement and Improv:

Everyone loves to improv, but have you ever worked on creating your own dance pieces for either yourself or others? Learn what it takes to compose a piece from picking music, creating storylines, visualizing lighting and costumes and of course, phrasing movement. Take these skills with you to your Poms Teams, Orchesis Groups and Musical Theatre Intensives. It is strongly recommended that dancers in this class take ballet, jazz and an additional style to assist in a range of dance knowledge.

*Dancers in this class who show a strong understanding of the elements of time, space and energy, will be allowed to submit a request to choreograph a dance that will perform in our studio’s recital. The submission is not a guarantee.

Class Attire: Comfortable, movable clothing. Clean gym or street shoes (for inside use only) or jazz shoes. Please bring a notebook and pen with you.

Musical Theatre:

Fun and animated! This style mixes dance technique, a multitude of dance styles, acting and storytelling. This is a great class for those who love transforming into different characters. Strongly recommended that those taking this class also take a jazz class to help elevate their technique and skills so that Musical Theatre time can delve more into characters and styling.

Class Attire: Form fitting shorts, pants or leggings, leotard or tight top. Hair pulled back secured away from face. Jazz Shoes. Some classes may be asked to purchase character heels, this is dependent on class level and will be communicated to the class directly.

Poms Technique:

Focusing on the technique and elements that are most often incorporated into High School and College Poms/Dance Teams. Working with dancers to elevate turns, jumps, kicks and additional tricks to help prepare for auditions and team placements. To help get you audition-ready, we recommend adding Turns & Progressions and Acro to your schedule. Also, be on the lookout for Poms Clinics throughout the fall and spring.

Strength & Flexibility:

A great addition for those looking to improve overall strength which leads to better muscle activation and alignment to improve dance skills such as leaps, jumps and more. Dancers will learn proper stretching techniques, conditioning exercises and incorporate strengthening movements. Using principals from Yoga and Pilates, we help dancers create the balance and improve these fundamentally different elements, by fusing them into one.

Class Attire: Form fitting shorts, pants or leggings, leotard or tight top. Hair pulled back, secured away from face. Jazz Shoes, NO SOCKS.

Tap:

Tap focuses on rhythm and musicality through the use of intricate footwork. Learning the proper technique it is an expression of movement through sound. Being not only the visual artist but an instrument as well makes this a style favorite! Believe it or not, a great addition to this class is ballet, strengthen your port-de-bras and presentation in addition to your fabulous feet.

TikTok Hip Hop:

Have a boy or girl at home bouncing off the walls?! Dance class is the perfect place to send them! They can discover all styles of dance including hip hop, break dance and even the current TikTok trends to discover their inner super star. Taking inspiration from World of Dance, So You Think You Can Dance and the ever-popular Jabbawockeez.

Class Attire: Comfortable, movable clothing. Clean gym or street shoes (for inside use only).

Theatre Jazz:

Is your child into theatre productions? Are they wanting to audition for their school musical? This class is great to enhance technique, learn vocabulary, build characterization and personality while working through a stylized Jazz Dance foundation.

Class Attire: Form fitting, non-restrictive clothing for Females. Non-Baggy Clothing for Gentlemen. Hair secured away from face. Jazz Shoes or Heels for Females, Jazz Shoes for Gentlemen.

Tot Dance:

Our tiny dancers fill our favorite class. This time together is filled with singalongs, skipping, jumping, twirling and much more! Geared to build motor skills, grace, confidence and socialization. It is not required for dancers to be potty trained, but parents must stay in the lobby during class in case of bathroom accidents.

Class Attire: Leotard of choice (with or without a skirt), Pink Ballet Tights. Hair pulled neatly back, in a bun if possible. Ballet Shoes.

Tot Plus:

Have a little one who is always bopping their head to music? This class is meant for our tiniest of dancers who are not quite ready to be in a class on their own. A parent or guardian participates with their dancer as the “PLUS ONE” to help facilitate a great bonding and learning experience through guided movement and activities.

Class Attire: Comfortable, moveable clothing. Clean gym or street shoes (for inside use only), jazz shoes, ballet shoes or socks.

Turns & Progressions:

This class focuses on the technique and training to better a dancer’s turns and jumps. Learning how to connect them together with smooth transitions and intricate choreography, helps improve the consistency of all our “trick” elements. Great for kids interested in High School and College dance teams!!

FAQs

 

Class Requirements?

It is recommended to have classes approved by the office before registering, to make sure dancer is trying the appropriate levels.

Advanced Level Classes- Requires teacher evaluation.

Lyrical & Contemporary Classes- Requires a 1 hour ballet class, per week in order to participate in these styles. Failure to attend ballet class regularly may result in a removal from these classes.

Movement Composition- Requires participation in at least one other class style, 3 styles are recommended.

Class Dress Code?

See individual class descriptions for dress code and required shoes.

Class Levels?

Artistic Pursuit reserves the right to place dancers in the appropriate levels. This may mean that a dancer stays in a labeled class level for more than one year. It is at the studio and teacher discretion if a dancer changes class levels either during a season or at the start of a new season.

What are NIR Classes?

These classes are meant to focus on technique rather than performance for the duration of the year. These classes will not learn recital dances or participate in the recital at the end of the year.

What are Company Classes?

These classes are reserved for those dancers in our Artistic Pursuit Dance Company. An audition at the start of the season is required to be placed in these companies and in these classes. Artistic Pursuit may make an exception when necessary to accommodate dancers of a certain skillset for a certain style. Non-company dancers in these classes are required to take 1 ballet class per week, and must adhere to company dress codes and guidelines. Company classes may focus on choreography and may be used as supplemental rehearsal time when needed. Company class levels are based on ability and not on age.
